The first place you reach or land on is LEH – the capital of Ladakh. Unlike the other capital cities in India, Leh is a small town with all the basic amenities like hotels, hospitals, schools, markets etc… the only difference is that it’s at an elevation of about 11000 ft. above the sea level.
When you fly in here, the most important thing to do is to head straight away to your hotel room and relax or wander into the beautiful gardens of your hotel, why so? Is because for first 2 days you need to acclimatize your body to the climatic conditions here, there is lack of oxygen levels and one can easily fall prey to mountain/ altitude sickness, the most common symptoms of same is nausea, dizziness, vomiting, severe headaches if not treated in time it can also lead to death. Hence we at Beyond Voyages always suggest people to have a medical checkup and also to incur some physical fitness before they reach the destination. Also there are medicine’s that can help keep the altitude sickness at bay.
Leh is the crowded place in the entire of Ladakh, though you get the perception of it being very laid back and basic, Leh will amaze you with what it has in its kitty, with more foreign tourists than Indians travelling to this place, you will see most of the things are made available here to suit the lifestyles of the foreigners.
Ladakh is a land inhabited by Buddhists, as Buddhism is also a prime religion and way of living here. It’s like a mini Tibet. There are many beautiful monasteries like Hemis Monastery, Shey Thiksey & Alchi to name a few that describe the rich culture and heritage of Ladakh and hence are also prime tourist spot.
